The Sangre de Cristo Mountains grace our western horizon, the lovely Spanish Peaks are visible in the northern part of the district, and Fisher's Peak is not hard to see from the eastern side of the district. Culebra Peak is the highest mountain visible from Weston in the Sangre de Cristo range, rising to 14,069 feet above sea level. The rural area of the district encompasses nearly 190 square miles of territory. The San Isabel National Forest, Spanish Peaks Wilderness Area, and Trinidad Lake State Park are just three of the many area attractions.

Our school buses travel county roads that follow several canyons, including Sarcillo, Burro, and Wet Canyons. A few of the other canyons in the district include Primero, San Pablo, and Valdez Canyons.

The Purgatoire River flows through the southern region of our district. The boundaries demonstrate elevation changes from about 6,500 to 9,500 feet above sea level. The highest point in the district is not far from Cucharas Pass, elevation 9,994 feet.

The area abounds in wildlife, including elk, mule deer, bighorn sheep, black bears, mountain lions, many species of birds, and a few species of reptiles. Two popular fishing spots on the western border of the Primero District are North and Monument Lakes. Big-game hunting is also popular in the region.

The arid, dry climate and low humidity levels provide generally comfortable conditions year-round with low rates of nuisance insects. Colorado averages over 300 days per year of sunshine, making this an outdoor paradise.

The people of the Primero School District are hard-working, care deeply about their children, and are very involved in school activities and supportive of the local school. The ranchers in the district raise mainly beef cattle, horses, and sheep. The natural gas, oil, and mining industries are major employers and sources of tax-base in the district.
