JULY 2007 PRIMERO RE-2 NEWS


July 31: The State of Colorado released CSAP Scores for Grades 4-10 reading, writing, and math and science and Grades 3 math and writing today. Scores were also released for the 2007 administration of the ACT exam to Juniors.

The numbers of students scoring Proficient and Advanced in grades 3-10 in all subjects tested (reading, writing, math and science) were:

    Reading: 62.3% (64.7% in 2006)

    Writing: 49.2% (45.6% in 2006)

    Science: 48.9% (48.8% in 2006)

    Math: 38.5% (51.5% in 2006)

The composite average ACT test score for Primero was 14.4. The state average for 2007 is 19.8.

July 24: Special Board Meeting: Collaborative Design Session Report from The Neenan Company regarding proposed building additions and revisions. The public was invited to attend this important meeting and to review the proposals. An ice cream social followed the meeting.

The base scope of the building project as outlined by Neenan was $7.3 million. With additional add-ons, many that are critical to the function of the school, the total cost of the proposed project is $9.8 million.

The average taxpayer with a $50,000 market value home would pay only $26.19 total in school taxes with the bond, $350,000 general fund override, and $150,000 transporation override.

The one action item at the special meeting was for the board to hire Jessica (Corsentino) Berry as the new high school varsity volleyball coach.


July 10: Board of Education Meetings; Work Session at 5 PM and Regular Session at 6 PM

The Board held a Work Session regarding the District's Vision, Mission and Goals. They had begun this work at the May 15 Work Session. The Board reaffirmed its mission statement and four major objectives for the next several years:

  1. Participation and teamwork in harmony among staff, parents, students, community, Board of Education, administrators, Accountability Committee, local organizations and business.

  2. Student achievement in all subjects will allow Primero to be ranked in the top 10% of the State's districts.

  3. The passing of a mill levy override and bond issue will allow our budget to stabilize and give the district a self-sustaining transportation system.

  4. Our schools will serve all student and staff needs, which inclues improvements to create a healthy and safe building.

The focus areas for the district's work will include the four focus areas from 2006-07 plus two more:

  1. High expectations for all;

  2. Curriculum alignment, especially in reading, writing and math;

  3. Using data to making daily instructional decisions;

  4. Collaboration, cooperation and communication;

  5. Literacy development of students; and

  6. Meeting the needs of all students through the Response to Intervention (RTI) process, especially gifted and talented, at risk and special education students.

Major action items included:

  • Hiring Simon Shah as the district's new English teacher and Tami Kitchen as the new in-school suspension supervisor

  • Approving an amended budget for 2006-07, approving the carry-forward balance of funds from 2006-07 into 2007-08 and authorizing their use, and authorizing transfers of funds to cover deficits in accounts in the amended budget

  • Authorizing purchased services with Northstar Engineering of Pueblo for $8,600 to conduct studies of the septic system, groundwater and wastewater, permitting processes and to make recommendations for the building project

  • Accepting the resignation of math teacher, Bob Moore, who has taken a job with Pioneer Natural Resources as a mechanic

  • Approval of Third Readings of revised board policies JEA, Compulsory Attendance Ages; JFBA/JFBA-R, Intra-District Choice/Open Enrollment; JFC/JFC-R, Student Withdrawal from School/Drop-outs; and JH, Student Absences and Excuses.
